Climb Description

Alto de Naranco is one of the most popular cycling climbs in Asturias. It begins right in the heart of Oviedo, with the statue at the top of the climb visible from over much of the city.

It's a nice climb with gradients that are fairly tough, but not overly challenging, and with nice views all the way up. Early on in the climb you ride past two UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The churches of Naranco have been identified as some of the finest examples of late Visigothic / early Christian architecture, and are worth stopping at to have a look around.

The climb has been used several times in the Vuelta a España and also has hosted its own race - the Subida a Naranco. The race, which has been held on-and-off for over 70 years has often had quite prestigious fields. Winners include Grand Tour winners Federico Bahamontes, Tony Rominger and Roberto Heras.

Alto de Naranco is open throughout the year.

Roads & Traffic

The road is in very good condition throughout. There is generally little traffic on the climb, although it can get a bit more busy on sunny weekends and holidays.

Alternative Routes

It is possible to reach Alto de Naranco from the west side, following a beautiful narrow road which traverses the side of the mountain. We don't have a profile for this as it's more of a rolling route than a sustained climb, but its well worth checking out.
