Climb Description
Monte Igueldo (also known as Igeldo in Basque) from San Sebastían is home to the self-styled 'Best View in the World'. While this is a contentious claim, it does certainly boast a fine vista looking over the stunning San Sebastían Bay. Not quite so picturesque is a small, dated fairground which surrounds the viewing area and costs €2 entry. The climb itself though is very enjoyable. Leaving from La Concha beach in the heart of San Sebastían, you continue following the coast before climbing a series of hairpin bends to the Mendiotz hill - overlooking the city. Once you have passed here, including the turn-off to the fairgeound, the scenery opens up and the gradients become very gentle, while providing some beautiful views out to the Bay of Biscay. If you are staying in or near San Sebastían, this is a highly recommended climb. It is also a great way to enter or leave San Sebastían, avoiding the very busy road network to the south of the city.
From the top of the climb, there is a long false flat with stunning views, which is well worth riding, even if you then descend the same way.
Monte Igueldo is open throughout the year.
Roads & Traffic
The road is in very good condition throughout.
This is the busier side of the climb, but there is generally not too much traffic here. The first couple of kilometres can get quite busy during weekends in the summer, but the climb is usually still enjoyable ro ride.
