Oviedo: Tour Extension
Oviedo is a great place to stay for a few nights extra at the start or end of our cycling holidays in the Asturias region. It is a vibrant city that is steeped in history, and has an excellent gastronomic tradition.
Below are just a few of the highlights that you can visit in the city:
Oviedo has a large and impressive old town centered around its 8th century cathedral. The narrow streets are charmingly decorated with red granite and marble, and there are intriguing statues and sculptures at every turn.
The Archaeological Museum is well worth a visit. It contains many locally found artefacts and it helps to explain the history of the Kingdom of Asturias.
The Santa María del Naranco church is situated on a hill to the west of the city center. It is a UNESCO World Heritage listed monument because of its importance as an example of late Visigothic and early Christian architecture.
Originally built as part of a palace complex for King Ramiro I, the church came to be identified with the early Kingdom of Asturias. The kingdom was the only part of the Iberian peninsula to resist being conquered by the powerful Muslim caliphate of Al-Andalus, and is credited with keeping Christianity alive as an institution in Spain.
Over the following centuries, the Kingdom of Asturias would expand from Oviedo, joining with the neighbouring region of León, and eventually forming the Kingdom of Castile. Oviedo remained an important city throughout this time, and played its role in the rather controversial Christian reconquest of Spain.
Oviedo is home to some of the most hearty cuisine in Spain. Classic dishes include Cachopo (pictured above), which is a bit like a beef Schnitzel stuffed with cheese, ham, mushrooms, peppers and various other ingredients.
Even more typical of the region as a whole is Fabada Asturiana. This classic bean and sausage casserole, made with high quality local produce, is served everywhere throughout the region. It has its heritage in the mining tradition of the Asturias region, and was designed to give a calorie dense meal; something which also works well for cyclists!
Cider is the traditional drink in Oviedo (although, if you are not a big fan, you can also find excellent local beer and wine). The most popular spot for locals is Gascona Street, situated not far from the cathedral in the historic center.
It is heaving with bars and cider houses which also serve all the classic Asturian dishes. It's a really atmospheric area in the evenings and is the best way to get involved in Asturian culture!
