Vallter 2000 is the highest road climb in Catalonia - one of only four in the region which ascend to over 2,000m altitude (the '2000' in the name is a reference to the high altitude). The climb has been used in both the Vuelta a España and Volta a Catalunya professional cycling races. The latter of which held a stage finish here in 2014 - won by BMC's American rider Tejay van Garderen.
The climb itself is scenic and enjoyable to ride, particularly on a clear day when you can see the majestic Pic de la Dona towering over the border between France and Spain. However, like many climbs up to a ski resort, it slightly lacks the tranquility and has a more artificial nature than a traditional mountain pass.
Nevertheless, Vallter 2000 is the highest road climb in the region and it takes you into the heart of the Catalan Pyrenees: it is a climb not to be missed for climbing aficionados.
Vallter 2000 is open throughout the year, with only short term closures in winter if the roads need to be cleared of snow. Descents in winter can be bitterly cold though and we would only advise attempting the climb from late March to the end of November.
