Climb Description
Sierra de Líjar is situated near the town of Algodonales, just to the north of the Sierra de Grazalema mountains. The climb begins 500m to the east of La Muela on the CA-0448. Here you turn south, following the signs to 'Area Recreativo La Muela' and continue on the track to the top of the Sierra de Líjar.Sierra de Líjar has many ingredients for a great climb. It is reasonably long, with sweeping hairpin bends and great views from the top. However, the road surface is a big problem that affects the enjoyment of the climb on a road bike.
If you are in the area on a hybrid or mountain bike (or for some unknown reason a cyclocross bike), it is a great ascent and one of the most highly recommended in the region.
The climb is normally open throughout the year. In July and August it can be very hot.
Roads & Traffic
The road surface is poor throughout the climb. It is compacted dirt with quite a lot of loose gravel on the surface. It can just about be climbed on a road bike, but is more enjoyable with a hybrid or mountain bike.
There is virtually no traffic throughout the climb.
