Climb Description

Puerto de la Joya is a short and pleasant climb in the Málaga province of Andalucía. It passes through open countryside, with nice views of the medium mountains that surround Antequera and can be combined with several other climbs in the area.

The climb is named after the village of La Joya (the Jewel) near to the top and is ideally situated between Antequera and the city of Málaga, making it a popular choice with cyclists who are in the area to check out the historic sites in the two cities. These include the Dolmenes and Alcazaba in Antequera, and the Roman remains in Málaga, which is one of Spain's oldest settlements.

The ascent from Casablanquilla is the most challenging side, being both the longest and the most inconsistent. There are steep gradients and gravel sections (including a short descent) which add to the difficulty, but it is still a climb worth doing on a road bike, with the open scenery offering rewarding views.

Puerto de la Joya is open throughout the year.

Roads & Traffic

The road surface is in mixed condition. The first part of the climb, on the A-343 road, is largely in very good condition. However, after turning off towards La Joya it deteriorates, with some gravel sections which are slightly rough but still OK to ride on a road bike.

There is little traffic throughout the climb.

Alternative Routes

Puerto de la Joya can also be climbed from Antequera and from Villanueva de la Concepción.
