Climb DescriptionKalbario (also known as Calvario) is a short climb in the Basque Country, linking the towns of Mutriku and Astigarribia. It is an alternative route than taking the busier coastal road to Deba. The climb from Astigarribia is more challenging than the average gradient suggests, as the first kilometre is little more than a false flat, before the real challenge starts.
The maximum gradient is 14% and the last 2km rarely drop below 8%, making it a reasonably challenging short ascent. Kalbario is often used on the Tour of the Basque Country cycling race, often during the middle of a stage, and breakaways are frequently formed on the steepest parts of the climb. It is a reasonably picturesque climb, although forest generally obscures views of the coast.
Kalbario is open throughout the year.
Other sidesKalbario can also be climbed from Mutriku .
