Climb Description
Collada de Toses from Ribes de Freser is a pleasant climb running parallel to the French border in the Catalan Pyrenees. It is a high mountain climb and has pleasant scenery, but most of the route is in forest and so there are no great views. Indeed, the scenery at the top is particularly disappointed, with a large concrete hotel dominating the landscape. From Ribes de Freser you stay on the main N-260 road as far as Planoles. From here you can either continue on the N-260 or take the smaller and quieter GIV-4016. The former probably has the slightly more interesting scenery, while the latter is the more challenging climb and is a more remote and tranquil road (the profile above is for the GIV-4016 route). There is little to choose between them though, so feel free to decide for yourselves.
Collada de Toses is one of the most important passes in the region, which means that it is cleared of snow at times during winter; however, don't count on it being open from December to April. The rest of the year it is usually fine.
Roads & Traffic
The road surface is in very good condition.
There is not much traffic on this climb, but it is not completely empty like some others in the region. The section between Ribes de Freser and Planoles is slighlty more busy than the rest of the route, but it is not enough to cause a nuissance for cyclists.
