Climb Description

Castillo del Inglés is a pleasant climb into the Aiako-Harria Natural Park - situated on the border between the regions of Guipuzkoa and Navarra. This ascent from Oiartzun is the more scenic of the two sides, with some fine views as you climb out of the forest.

Despite the name - The English Castle - (also known as Ingelesaren Gaztelua in Basque), there is no monument at the top of the climb. The name derives from a British industrialist who exploited the mines in the area. The ruins of his residence can be visited with a short hike from the road, but there isn't much to see, and it's not really worth the effort in cycling shoes!

Castillo del Inglés is open throughout the year.

Roads & Traffic

The road is in good condition throughout and there is little traffic on the climb.

Alternative Routes

Castillo del Inglés can also be climbed from Irún.
