Climb Description

El Alguacil is one of the most challenging climbs in Andalucia, with steep gradients throughout its final 8km. It is situated in the Sierra Nevada National Park, and can easily be reached by bike from the city of Granada.

The climb begins gently, following the same initial road as Pico del Veleta. However, just after Guejar Sierra, you turn onto a less well trodden road and begin climbing with gradients at around 10-11%. These barely relent for the next 8km, giving El Alguacil a similar feel to more famous tough climbs like Gamoniteiro or Mortirolo. This is not one for the faint hearted, but the views are picturesque and the descent back into Guejar Sierra is certainly memorable.

El Alguacil is open from around April until November. During the winter it is also open up to around 1,500m altitude, and usually higher. Only closing occasionally during periods of heavier snowfall.

Roads & Traffic

The road surface is in very good condition.

There is considerable traffic from Pinos Genil until Guejar Sierra at certain times of the year (weekends and holidays in particular). From Guejar Sierra, where the real climbing begins, the road is practically empty.

Alternative Routes

This is the only way to climb to El Alguacil by road.
