Santiago de Compostela ExtensionsSantiago de Compostela is the capital of Galicia and the final destination of the Camino de Santiago pilgrim trail. Although not home to as many famous attractions as many other Spanish cities, Santiago boasts a warm and friendly atmosphere with locals and pilgrims mingling together. The following are some of our favourite things to do in Santiago de Compostela:
Santiago CathedralThe Cathedral is the reported burial place of St James (Santiago), who the city is named after. The intricately designed building, dating from the eleventh century, is an impressive feat of architecture.
The church is usually full of pilgrims who have made their way on foot or bicycle to the city. Make sure you go on the tour of the cathedral roof.
Pulpo a la GallegaGalicia has a rich food heritage. The most famous dish of the region is pulpo a la gallega (polba a feira in galician) and is definitely worth trying. Pulpo a Gallega is simply octopus, olive oil and paprika. However, the Galician's have mastered cooking the octopus to tender perfection, without the rubberiness often associated with it. See here for more details.
The Old TownThe Cathedral is not the only amazing piece of architecture in the city. The old town is full of Gothic, Romanesque and Baroque design.
Atlantic CoastSantiago is about an hour from the Atlantic coast. Among the most picturesque places to visit is Cap Finisterre, a name given by the Romans meaning 'end of the earth'. The historic city of La Coruña is also nearby.
Mingle with PilgrimsEveryone in Santiago de Compostela has a story to tell of how they got there. Meet people in one of the many tapas or wine bars and share your story with them.
